چکیده

In this paper the capability of the two-fluid model to describe the transition from stratified to slug flow is investigated, by employing three different numerical discretization techniques: classical finite volume, discontinuous Galerkin, and a Lagrangian finite volume approach. It is shown that stratified wavy flow can transition from well-posed to ill-posed following the KelvinHelmholtz instability mechanism. In the ill-posed regime grid convergence cannot be obtained. However, with low order discretization methods, or coarse grids and time steps, well-posed numerical solutions can still be obtained. Such solutions should however be critically assessed because they seem to be physical while in fact they are meaningless. The conditional well-posedness of the two-fluid model therefore requires a careful discretization in order to use it for slug capturing.

Numerical investigation of upward air-water annular, slug and bubbly flow regimes

In this paper, numerical investigation of upward two phase flow of air-water has been studied. Different conditions of flow regimes including annular, wispy annular, slug, churn and bubbly are simulated based on Hewitt and Roberts map, and a good agreement between the experimental data of the map and the numerical simulation has been observed. Accordingly, a proper CFD model in CFD software of ...

Comparison of the hyperbolic range of two-fluid models on two-phase gas -liquid flows

In this paper, a numerical study is conducted in order to compare hyperbolic range of equations of isotherm two-fluid model governing on two-phase flow inside of pipe using conservative Shock capturing method. Differential equations of the two-fluid model are presented in two forms (i.e. form I and form II). In forms I and II, pressure correction terms are hydrodynamic and hydrostatic, respecti...

Simulation of gas-liquid two phase flow in upriser pipe of gas-lift systems

Gas-lift pumps are devices for lifting liquid phase incorporating the gas phase to be injected in the bottom of liquid column. They are widely used in various industrial applications such as oil extracting in petroleum industries. Gas-liquid flow being the main part of the flow through these systems, flowing in vertical pipes of gas-lift pumps has different regimes namely bubbly, slug, chur...

The Indication of Two-Phase Flow Pattern and Slug Characteristics in a Pipeline Using CFD Method

Multiphase flows are commonly encountered in oil and gas industries. The transport of multiphase flow causes the formation of slug, the increase of pressure drop and the possibility of phase changes therefore, a set of simulation runs was performed to predict flow regimes in a horizontal pipeline, and the results were compared with the Baker chart. The effects of small downward inclinations of ...

Simplified 1D Incompressible Two-Fluid Model with Artificial Diffusion for Slug Flow Capturing in Horizontal and Nearly Horizontal Pipes

This article proposes a numerical resolution of a one-dimensional (1D), transient, simplified two-fluid model regularized with an artificial diffusion term for modeling stratified, wavy and slug flow in horizontal and nearly horizontal pipes. Artificial diffusion is introduced to prevent the unbounded growth of instabilities where the 1D two-fluid model is ill-posed. We propose a method to set ...
